Prof. (Dr.) Manendra Kumar: A Visionary Scientist and Icon of Zoological Education in India

In the world of zoological sciences and higher education, Prof. (Dr.) Manendra Kumar stands as a symbol of excellence, intellect, and lifelong dedication. With an illustrious career spanning over four decades, he has transformed the academic landscape of zoology in India through his pioneering research, prolific writing, and unwavering commitment to environmental awareness. 

Born on January 15, 1957, in a village in Sitamarhi district, Bihar, Dr. Kumar’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of India’s most decorated academicians is nothing short of inspirational. His life embodies the power of perseverance, intellect, and a vision to make science serve humanity. 

A Glorious Academic and Professional Journey 

Dr. Kumar began his teaching career in 1978 as a Lecturer in Zoology at M.S.K.B. College, Muzaffarpur, where his passion for teaching and research quickly earned him respect among peers and students alike. Rising through the ranks, he served as Reader, University Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Director of UGC-HRDC, and Principal of M.S.K.B. College under B.R.A. Bihar University. 

Even after his retirement, his dedication to education continues — he now serves as the Coordinator of Zoology at Nalanda Open University, nurturing new generations of scholars with the same energy and passion that marked the beginning of his career. 

Pioneering Research and Publications 

With over 43 years of teaching and research experience, Dr. Kumar’s scholarly contributions to Entomology, Plant Protection, and Environmental Sciences have been widely recognized. His Ph.D. thesis on “Bionomics and Control of Litchi Fruit Borers” became a milestone study in developing eco-friendly pest control techniques that support sustainable agriculture. 

He has published over 100 research papers in prestigious national and international journals, contributing valuable insights into insect ecology, plant protection, and environmental conservation. 

Dr. Kumar is also the author of 12 books, each reflecting his vast knowledge and passion for science. His popular titles include: 

Biochemistry – The Catalysts of Life, Biotechnology: Issues and Challenges, Environmental Science – Issues and Challenges, Animal Physiology, Basics of Cell Biology, Endocrinology, Essentials of Developmental Biology, The Basics of Animal Behaviour, and Fundamentals of Molecular Biology, among others.

Dr. Kumar has represented India in numerous international conferences held in Singapore, Bangkok, Nepal, and Uzbekistan, where he delivered keynote lectures on sustainable scientific practices and environmental protection. 

His biography has been featured in Emerald Who’s Who of Asia by Rifacimento International (New Delhi), and he was named “Man of the Year 2003” by the American Biographical Institute (USA). 

Mentorship, Media Presence, and Social Commitment 

A guiding light for scholars, Dr. Kumar has supervised many Ph.D. candidates and led research projects funded by UGC and ICAR, focusing on agricultural sustainability and pest management. 

He is also a familiar face on Doordarshan Bihar, where his enlightening talks on global warming, public health, and education continue to engage the public. Through his words and actions, he has consistently promoted the idea that science must contribute to human welfare and ecological harmony.

Even at the age of 68 , prof. Kumar is still engaged in active research , education and social activities, Considering his dedication and commitment to society, he has been recently honoured with “Ravindra Ratn Puraskar, Rashtriye Gaurav Award“, “Ravindra Nath Tagore Lifetime Achievement Award“, “Bharat Ratna Samman” etc of different National organisations . 

His contribution is also included in “ Forbes World Book of Records “and“ UN World Book of Records“. Very recently , he has been appointed as National President of International Human Rights , Delhi. Undoubtedly, Prof. Kumar is eminent Educationist and Entomologist of India.
